Book Preview

Be apart of my next photo exhibit! "The Face of Change"

Most of you may have known that I was able to attend 3 Obama events during the campaign trail last year. (Madison, Grant Park & the inauguration)

What you probably don't know is that I am planning a photo exhibit titled "The Face of Change" due to open June 6th at the Glass Nickel on Atwood.

Part of the artist statement is involving the reader to think about this concept of what it takes to create a change within their own lives. To take a look at these photos and think about how they reflect on their own lives.

One of the ideas I had to take 2 things and create something new around this concept is to bring in any group organizers, volunteer organization or group that organizes people to be part of "The Face of Change." This is where I would like your help. If you are involved in an organization or group that makes a difference in any regard I would like to include you as a representative for "The Face of Change." My hope is to have a list of groups involved in the official press release of the show to have a representative simply come to the premiere with a name tag / mailing list or basic information about their cause to speak to people to encourage them to create a change in the here and now as they look at and enjoy the photos. :)

Sound like a good idea? I hope I can build a base of support for this part of the exhibit to inspire and move people to action through my photographs.

Otherwise the exhibit will be on display through August 6th if you cannot make it out to the premiere June 6th at the Glass Nickel on Atwood Ave.

Jesse and Erica Land Wedding

Another wedding is in the books and with that the downloads and back ups are complete. Seeing the results of my hard work on the screen is just as exciting and fun to see as shooting the wedding. Weddings really allow me to be creative in expressive in many different ways. They are all very similar yet all very different in many ways. The interaction of taking photos of people is something I feel is very important and essential to a successful wedding day shoot.

The interaction builds with each interaction and the tension that most people feel when a camera is pointed there way fades.

Congrats to Jesse & Erica Land, thanks for letting me photograph your special day!

Shower Economics 101

So I think i have some of my best thoughts or ideas while in the shower. This is where the following idea came from, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

To think of the state of our nations economy is a very scary thought, however I feel that optimism and confidence is the only way we can think about our future.

The complexity and enormousness of the ideas that have placed us in the situation that we are in are both massive is size and scope. The recession stems from an increasing growth of a world market, inflation, greed & corruption (along with a dozen other things). It seems to me that the American people have been thrown to the side, all for the sake of a buck.

Lets face it, we cannot compete with prices of China with a population of over a billion and an equal amount of people living in poverty to the entire United States. This deployment of jobs overseas is the loss of true purchasing power. In the long term it increases costs, unemployment and the debt of the American people.

This is where I feel a deeply rooted problem of the state of our economy stems from. So what is the solution??

We need to bring the jobs and what it means to be American back. The sense of who we are as a people has strayed but isn't lost.

I don't claim to have the solution, but it occurred to me while in the shower, somewhere between the shampoo and body wash, that as long as companies motive for being in business is to turn a buck, you know you've dropped the soap.

Would it be feasible for the United States government to counter act this balance so that both businesses & consumers once more would benefit in different ways for those 3 short words?? MADE IN AMERICA.

So can anyone tell me how to make blogging more effective? Is it really just a way to keep a journal or give out load comments on things that bug or interest you?

I guess, i haven't done this for some time since I wasn't sure what I should be doing to increase the use or visits to my blog.

I attended the Obama Rally in Chicago on Tuesday and it was truly inspiring to be apart of. The energy in the air could be felt by the shear excitement and rebirth of change in America. I truly have never felt more proud to be an American and part of such a historic event. Hope you enjoy

A once in a lifetime experience!

I was ecstatic to receive this letter in the mail after sending the photos I shot of Pedro Guerrero at Promega Corp. for his 91st bday. I got to visit with Mr. Guerrero for a short time at the exhibit / book signing and I must say it was very inspiring to meet someone of his caliber.

My believe and approach to photography is pointed out beautifully by Mr. Guerrero. I have always believed that in order to capture beauty of ones soul or self, as a photographer you must be as unintrusive as possible to just let the person be. One of the things I pride myself on the most is my ability to anticipate the shot before it happens. This involves proper placement, the study of light and lastly knowing the limitations of the camera. This anticipation and creativity rise above everything else in importance for in real time you don't have time to think of these things in order to get the shot.

Pedro Guerrero comes to Madison for his 91st Bday!

Daniel Swadener and Promega Corp. were kind enough to bring in the world famous photographer Pedro Guerrero into Madison for an exhibit and event that I will remember for a very long time. While observing and taking pictures of a man I have learned about through visiting Taliesin North in Spring Green, WI watching and studying his DVD, it was a great pleasure and honor to meet the 91 year old on his birthday last Tuesday.

The awe and inspiration to meet someone like this was a 1st for me and I think the picture of the young boy and his mother explains it perfectly for me. I can only hope one day that my images will be as admired and sought after as this man. If he were for some reason to view these, I hope I captured and expressed my excitement and inspiration for a chance to meet such man.

I think the simplest of things or actions can create the most beautiful photos on your wedding day. The small things make the biggest difference in capturing these emotions or periods in time throughout your day. As a photographer I am very passionate about capturing this emotion and action in real time as it is happening allowing you just to BE, is where the real beauty and memories live.

State Fair!

Visiting the WI, State Fair for the very 1st time was a fun experience that I or my belly won't soon forget (so much yummy carney food!). The smells, the patterns, the animals, the food & the people are all part of the excitement at the fair. Although I wasn't sure how I felt about seeing all the animals caged up for show and tell time, it was bitter sweet for me I think because the animals are all so beautiful looking their best, yet you can still see that caged mentality and lack of freedom in their eye. While being entertaining and educational for many children it is a good way to get the community involved in their local FFA.

Beauty is truly found in the eye of the beholder, however I would argue beauty and compelling imagery can be found in normal objects and places others would not normally look twice at. As a photographer these sort of things compel me to take photographs to show the viewer that normal things can effect and inspire the mind and eye to look twice!

The Ark Band

The Ark Band in Chicago let me back stage on Saturday to snap a few photos of their upbeat, roots/reggae/soca/calypso style show. They definitely were very entertaining with the crowd jumping in the middle of the afternoon with a great sound and performance, go check them out!

Cubs Game!

Ah yes the city of Chi, the people, the food, the buildings, and the Cubs at Wrigley field. As someone who is from Wisconsin and a Brewer fan 1st and foremost, I can still appreciate the pure entertainment by going to Wrigley field to watch the Cubs (loose 2-3 vs the Marlins) play. :) I need to get my blows in early as the Cubs have destroyed the Brewers in their 1st 3 games in their 4 game series in Milwaukee.

If you've never been to Wrigley I highly recommend going to see one of the last real ball parks left in the majors.

Photographing weddings for me is a creative expression of a milestone in your life. The details, expressions and joy throughout the day are all things that cannot be reproduced or staged. So the best way to capture / express your day through imagery is to shoot it as is, as it is happening. This combination of joy, beauty and creative expression is what I really enjoy about capturing weddings.

Taliesan Experience

This weekend was one to remember without a doubt. I want to thank Michael Ulrich from Lakeside Gallery for getting me involved out at Taliesin in his ecology study and for introducing me to Becky the featured artist to Friday night's reception of her titled piece Progress Report, which was recycled paper from the architects at Taliesan woven onto pulled string inside the hillside gallery of Taliesan.

The piece for me was really an extension of the space, using what is there in its natural state, I would think it would of been something Frank Lloyd Wright would of very much enjoyed. Becky pictured here was a gracious host in a dress she made herself had a video of time lapsed pictures and video put together of her constructing her art. Very cool! Be sure to check out and learn more about this talented artist at her site holsum. Thanks again Becky!

Thanks to everyone who came out to support me at my first photography showing. Everything from turnout to sales well surpassed my expectations and want to be sure to let everyone know it really meant a lot to me! Obama Rally in Madison Wisconsin

The 17,000 plus people in the Kohl Center in Madison WI for the Obama rally was nothing less than amazing!

This shows the passion and overall feeling of the rally, shot during the extremely well produced video prior to Obama coming out. Very touching and inspirational!

I'm not sure who this reporter works for but to me this image tells a story in the expression. Any thoughts?

This is a unique one man concert with numerous working robots that play real instruments! He is on his Dubya Tour now were he dresses his robots as our fearless leader and his goons. He adds some great comic relief while rocking with his robots in a punk rock metal style of music! It is a concert I would highly recommend to anyone! Wonders in artistic expression?

It always seems to amaze me what sort of art or visual images are selected when people have a wide group or selection to pick from. Why creates there desire to what often times I feel is the worse image in the group? What are you thoughts on the images posted on my blog? Do you have one that does not belong? What makes a great image for you?

To me a great image is one that captures or expresses something deeper than the physical image. This is something that is very hard to express since that expression is something that can be different for each person viewing the image. With that in mind one would think that composition , lighting and direction would conquer in visual imagery, but that is often not the case. What drives you to an image? What make you like what you see or what makes you dislike something? I simply want you to be compelled by what you are looking at nothing more. I suppose you can't please everyone with any one image, so I guess I am just interested what people think of not only my art but art or photography in general.

I thought I would track any ideas or thoughts of a what I was currently reading at the present time. Yesterday I picked up Barack Obama's book "Dreams from My Father," of which I have found very compelling and very well written from the get go. My compulsion to pick this book up is driven from the sheer interest in who I believe would be the best thing for our country as the next president of the United States.

The book opens a wide variety of experiences and emotions for a very intelligent individual whose father is from Kenya and mother is white and from America. The experiences that Obama has during his childhood are extraordinary in a sense, from Hawaii to Indonesia Obama has more life experiences as a child than most people have in their entire life.

It is very rewarding to read and learn about someone who has become so prominent in today's society, yet to learn the similarities and battles he had as a child, teen and college student.

His perspective is incredibly in tune with the way I often think and see the world. It is driving me to read the book at a very fast rate. Confronting ones fears & an understanding of other peoples views while always open to suggestion and knowledge of something that is often times something that is simply misunderstood intrigue me to learn more about Obama.

Finding that right direction.

Have you ever thought you weren't sure if you were heading in the right direction in life? We all have our doubts and uncertainties in life at some time or another, but when do you really know if anything is right or wrong anyway? Why does this drive so many of us crazy in our everyday lives? Why should it, you have no control over it? Right? There will always be those certain people that have always known what they want to be when they are very young and excel very much at what they do. For those of us who are not so fortunate finding that niche or passion can be a very hard thing. I think these pressures and expectations from all sorts of different angles are one of the main contributions to the problem, since they don't forgive or judge on who or how smart you are, they are most definitely present. As someone who is always open for new things, new ideas and new people I think it is imperative to always keep a positive mindset and outlook. Because I believe one doesn't become angry, stressed, sad, or any sort of negative emotion, I believe they choose to enter that state of being unconsciously. Sure some things are depressing or will make you mad/sad or angry, but I think people become attached to that emotion for a different reason they are not able to recognize or address. I know its not a perfect world but if you were to choose between sad or happy, wouldn't a sane person choose happiness? Angry or nice? Stressed or Relaxed? Next time you feel irritated or angry at someone or something, simple observe what that emotion does to your psyche. Do not judge what you see, simply observe. I think you may be surprised what you find.
